Your Boothbay region beekeepers and honey lovers, Donna and Denny Denniston, make their honey on Barters Island, just past the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. They are quick to say, they don’t actually make the honey, the BEES do! They have hives all around Barters Island and beyond.

Raw local ‘Runny’ honey, Bee Stinger hot honey and Maine Mousse, a line of creamed honey or 100% honey that has been gently stirred over a few days until it reaches a thick, creamy consistency. Request! There has been a request to reorganize art classes. Any kind of art – painting (water/acrylics/oil), on canvas, paper, glass, etc. If you would like to help develop plans for art classes, please call or stop by. We opened The Community Center on August 29th, 2015. Since then, it has become a valued community resource.  We are open Monday through Friday, located in the Meadow Mall on Townsend Avenue in Boothbay Harbor.

The Community Center is staffed, furnished, and run entirely by volunteers. We offer free tea and coffee, snacks, WiFi and a warm welcome to visitors of all ages. We also offer weekly classes, all free, and all taught by volunteers.

​The Center has several rooms, including a welcoming lobby area, office space, an arts and crafts room, a puzzle area, a resource room, and areas to hold classes, meetings, and/or play cards or board games, a teaching room, and a computer area. Down the hall, we have an Exercise Annex and a Fiber Arts room for weaving, knitting, crocheting, sewing, and more.

Travel back in time to vintage Vacationland. Nowhere else in New England can you ride the rails behind an authentic steam locomotive surrounded by historic Maine buildings preserved in a recreated village, and view a collection of 60 antique autos. A unique location for weddings and receptions.

The Boothbay Region Garden Club supports our community in many ways, such as scholarships for YMCA camperships and college students entering environmental studies, beautification of public buildings, planting and maintaining of public gardens, among many other projects. Non-profit organization conserving land in the Boothbay Region with over 30 miles of hiking trails. Open year-round, free of charge. Preserves include woodlands, wetlands, salt marshes, islands, significant bird habitat, historical and archaeological sites, and working waterfront. Trail guides available at 60 Samoset Road, our website, and at preserve kiosks.

70 rooms and two cottages, 40 slip marina. All rooms are over the water with balconies and water views. Owned and managed by the Brown family for over 75 years.

Brown’s Wharf Marina is located on the east side of Boothbay Harbor.. Our facility is the second marina on your starboard side when entering the harbor. There is 25 feet of water in the channel and at our docks. (Use NOAA chart 13293.)

The docks, in excellent condition, are floating structures with finger piers. Alongside docking is also available (set your fenders to the waterline). The marina can accommodate vessels to 165′. Brown’s Wharf also has 6 transient moorings, available on a first come, first serve basis.  If you need a mooring, a slip for your boat up to 165 feet, or just information about marine cruising facilities locally or along the East Coast, ask Marina Manager Tim Brown. He’ll be more than happy to help you out.

Two grand houses, both built in 1807 in very different styles with dramatically different stories. Visit these historic treasures and hear stories of the people who lived and worked in these unique houses. Castle Tucker tells the story of the elegant lifestyle of Judge Silas and Tempe Lee for whom the house was built and the story of the Tuckers, a prominent shipping family’s life on the coast of Maine over a period of 150 years. Built for shipping magnate William Nickels, Nickels-Sortwell House tells the story of the rise and fall of a maritime family, the hotel years when guests from Maine, across the U.S., and Europe stayed at Turner’s Inn and later the Belle Haven, and finally the Sortwell family who restored the house as a beloved summer home in the 20th century. Shipping magnate William Nickels had this impressive mansion built in 1807 as a symbol of his wealth and status. His ships traveled to Europe and the West Indies, bringing back fine imported goods for wealthy Wiscasset households. William and Jane Nickels’ lavish lifestyle came to an abrupt end when Thomas Jefferson’s Embargo of 1807 devastated the East Coast economy by prohibiting international trade. By the time of his death in 1815, William Nickels was bankrupt, Jane had died, and their children were left with nothing but debt.

The Nickels’ house became a hotel managed by innkeeper Mary Turner for forty-four years. Known as Turner’s Tavern, it served working and professional guests while Mary also raised her family of nine children. After her death, a series of owners ran the hotel until 1899 when it was purchased by industrialist Alvin Sortwell as a summer home for his family. The Sortwells lovingly restored the house over a period of years and decorated it in the Colonial Revival style with fine antique furnishings.

The Nickel’s House is a National Historic Landmark and one of New England’s finest Federal-style houses.
